Myeongdong Topokki, Asian Avenue Sunway Pyramid

When it comes to Korean food, what is the first thing that crosses your mind? Korean BBQ? Dak-Galbi? Kimchi? Shin Ramyun?

I have always been a fan of Korean food, be it sweet or spicy, BBQ or anything else. However, there are so little choices of Korean food offered here in Malaysia! Other than the usual Korean BBQ joint or Dak-Galbi restaurant, there's only a handful of Korean restaurants serving Korean food that isn't just specializing in Korean BBQ or Dak-Galbi.

Therefore, I was really thrilled when Myeongdong Topokki, a Korean street food restaurant specializing in Topokki (Korean Rice Cake!), opened at Asian Avenue, Suwnay Pyramid!
The wonderful array of Korean street food available at Myeongdong Topokki, Sunway Pyramid!
Myeongdong Topokki is a mini stall located at the food street of Asian Avenue that is akin to a Subway ticketing counter. For those of you who don't know, Myeong-dong is one of Seoul's main shopping & makan district. And now, we need not to fly all the way to Myeongdong for delightful korean street snacks!

The wide array of side dishes to pair up with your topokki served at Myeongdong Topokki. The kitchen crew of Myeongdong Topokki is being led by a Korean Chef to retain it's originality & authenticity, and suit the local's taste at the same time.
Besides that, Myeongdong Topokki also serves rice bowls set meal that comes with 3 banchan (side dishes) and a hearty bowl of seaweed soup.
How you eat a topokki- but of course, you can opt to eat the side dishes on its own too.
Rice Punch RM4.50
A refreshing, barley-like drink imported from Korea.
Topokki RM8.90 (Original & Challenge)
Korean rice cake served with half-boiled egg & sliced fish cakes, cooked in a home-made thick sauce.
I had the privilege to try out both the original flavour & challenge spicy sauce. Both flavours are good in their own way, but I personally preferred the challenge sauce, despite the big gulps of water & rice punch I gulped down after that. The original flavour sauce is slightly inclined towards the sweet side, whereas the challenge flavour is well, super spicy. But packed with a punch of flavour.

Please do only order the challenge only if you are a big fan of spicy food!!
The topokki (rice cake) were so chewy & bouncy! Best consumed when hot & fresh out of the kitchen as the topokki hardens up if left intact for a while.
Kimali RM7
Glass noodle wrapped in seaweed, deep fried with a perfect golden-yellow tempura skin
A unique street snack that offers a contrast of texture- nice & crunchy on the outside, flavourful & soft on the inside.
Mixed Vegetable Tenpura RM2.50 per piece
The golden gue tempura batter was addictively crunchy. However, I find the vegetables a little bit undercooked- probably due it being too thickly sliced.
Karage Chicken RM6.50
Crunchy on the outside, tender on the inside. Warning: a highly addictive snack that will provoke you to pop one piece after another into your mouth. The karage was really good on its own already.
Urban Sarada RM5.80 (Urban Salad)
Lettuce, cherry tomatoes, sliced avocados, apple slice, crab stick & ebiko, topped with one of the best homemade salad dressing I've ever tasted- homemade pineapple dressing! The pineapple dressing was sweet, zesty & tangy. It tasted really refreshing & healthy. I initially thought that the dressing was made out of yoghurt & mango due to the creamy & sweet taste but oh my I got it completely wrong. A must-try!
Bulgogi Daebap RM12.90
Generous amount of BBQ Beef Slices topped on a big bowl of fluffy Korean rice.
Each slice of beef was marinated to perfection & had an aromatic smoky taste. Each slice literally melted in my mouth, and was irresistibly tender. A perfect match for the fluffy premium korean rice that absorbs the flavourful & savoury sauce from the meat.
The Bulgogi Daebap (& also the other set meal) comes with a bowl of seaweed soup & 3 mini banchans. Myeongdong Topokki's homemade kimchi had the right balance of sweetness, spiciness & sourness on my opinion & was really enjoyable. The homemade anchovies too, were crunchy & had the right amount of sweetness. I didn't really enjoyed the pickled veggie because it was sliced too thickly.

Myeongdong Topokki is currently having a promotion where you'll get a free Topokki after you collect 3 stamps!
